Following in the pathway of your ancestors means finding a path of your own…

Before he passed away, Uncle Kavika passed on a kuleana-a sacred responsibility-to his nephew Kimokeo.

His mission was to reconnect the distant ancestral islands of Hawaii: a 2,000 mile string of islands comprising the most remote archipelago in the world.

Kavika told Kimokeo to connect the islands by paddling a Hawaiian outrigger canoe the entire length of the archipelago, a feat that has never before been attempted in modern history.

This is the story of Kimokeo’s voyage.

Family of the Wa’a (formerly Beyond the Reef) premiered to a record audience of over 3,500 people at the Maui Film Festival on June 19th.

We are honored to have won the Audience Award for Spirit of Aloha, the perfect award for a film of this story.

Family of the Wa’a also showed at the Breckenridge Film Festival and won the award for Best Cinematography.

The film will be showing at the Pacific Rim Film Festival and the Long Island Film Festival, as well as many other location and festivals.

Alyssa Fedele directed Family of the Wa’a. It is her feature length directorial debut. Zachary Fink was the producer and cinematographer for Family of the Wa’a.
